March Madness Top Ten: My Own Ghost House and Dog & All/S Francis

Two writers who submitted to the March Madness Divergent Literature Contest had not one, but two pieces, in our top ten.  Today we present two pieces from S Francis

My Own Ghost House

I wandered deep into the woods.

Off the side of the road,

Overgrown and abandoned,

A house fell in disarray,

Gone, long gone, its inhabitants

Left quite a mess.

I wonder about them,

Maybe like Frost wondered

About the lad and lass

He thought must have loved

Their playtime view so much

They buried themselves in it,

forever.

Some days I made

Houses out of sticks.

Imagination won those.

Eventually, though

I needed a real house

Without a leaking roof,

With finished floors.

Imagination, not required,

Retreated to that old house

Buried forever, deep

Along an abandoned route.

Dog and All

This story begins in the mind of a dog

Who observes his man and his woman

Trying to decide upon its loyalty.

The man, a beast chasing bitches in heat

The woman, deciding which night would best

Serve breakfast for dinner.

The dog had a decision:

The familiar smell of dry

Lust that lingered like dust

On the floor under the bed

Balled up awaiting the long

Shaft of a broom to sweep them

Into oblivion

Once and for all.

Or

The liquidity of flowered perfumes

Would it be rose petals,

Lavender, magnolia or gardenia?

This surprise, the chase his dreams gave

After the rabbits fucked in their dens

Like this night was their last night

Before being caught with one fierce

Violent shake, neck broken

Once and for all.

This exposé of banality

Naked falling to its knees

In forced worship of time,

The dog wanted to name the story

The Eternal Return,

But wasn’t smart enough,

Dog and all.

  1. I loved Dog & All– the perspective was so cool. Also loved the language “The man, a beast chasing bitches in heat;” “The familiar smell of dry/Lust that lingered like dust,” “After the rabbits fucked in their dens/Like this night was their last night/
Before being caught with one fierce/Violent shake, neck broken/Once and for all.”
