The Sounds Inside

“Meet me at the reservoir” Dawn said to me.

I remember those words with proverbial clarity.

“Come on Michael, it’ll be fun. Billy’s going to swipe a 6 pack from his dad. We can do jack-knifes off the giant.”

‘The Giant’ is a colourful name for the rock where 3 teens slipped and fell a few years before. There wasn’t an angle where they didn’t look mangled and beaten up.

That’s it kids, give me surprise.

There’s the flash of a camera strobe.

Give me fear.


Give me faces twisted in reprisal and horror.


The papers went with the most flattering photograph. The photograph with indistinguishable faces.

Imagine holding a lighter under a wax doll and watching the face slowly melt and collect into a nightmare. The sagging cheeks, the formless mouth, the hollowed cheekbones. The nose slowly drips away, leaving behind the shell of mass production.
